Training

TGNI’s key aim is to establish a cohort of professional tourist guides to cover all guiding situations and demands. To achieve this aim, TGNI has worked in partnership with Belfast Metropolitan College, which has an established track record of delivering Tour Guide training for more than 15 years and the Ulster University to establish a clear, recognised framework of guiding qualifications to suit all tourist guiding situations.

Thus, TGNI members can avail of professional training at levels 2, 3 and 4. All levels are referenced to national qualifications frameworks and are therefore recognised throughout the UK and endorsed by Tourism NI and TGNI.

The OCN NI Level 2 Award is going strong in locations throughout Northern Ireland, with a number of guides gaining qualifications in Greater Belfast, the Mournes, the Glens and the Sperrins.

The OCN NI Level 3 Certificate is available since 2017 through Belfast Metropolitan College. Local Councils and Landscape Partnerships are also planning to offer these.

The Level 4 Certificate in Higher Education – Tour Guiding is available from September 2018. TGNI played a vital role in the development of this qualification in partnership with Belfast Metropolitan College and Ulster University.

There are still places available on for all levels starting in September but places are selling fast. Please get in touch with Nadine Bloomer for more information: nbloomer@belfastmet.ac.uk

TGNI’s membership categories reflect the levels of qualifications:

A tourist guide qualified at Level 2 (yellow ID card and lanyard) will deliver walking tours around designated sights or a specific route around a city, town, village or location.

A guide at Level 3 (green ID card and lanyard) will deliver city, themed coach-, or walking tours.

Tourist guides at Level 4 (blue ID card and lanyard) are qualified to offer tours around Northern Ireland and all Ireland by coach or walking, including tours lasting a number of days.

Language guides not yet qualified at levels 2, 3 or 4 (grey ID card and lanyard) are guiding in their respective languages.

TGNI Members at all levels are committed to Continued Professional Development (CPD) as an integral part of their TGNI membership. To this effect, TGNI offers an ongoing training programme which includes lectures, training days and site visits, which links in to the Belfast Metropolitan College and University courses.

TGNI stands for quality and best practice and prides itself in an active and involved membership of professionally trained, qualified tourist guides, who understand and engage in CPD to remain at the highest level of their performance.
