Jane O'Brien (PhD History) from Ennis Walking Tours has been running entertaining and thought-provoking walking tour experiences of the medieval town of Ennis in Co. Clare since 2005. A local and expert guide, Jane will lead you through the atmospheric streets and “bow-ways” of this colourful market town while revealing the intriguing characters and stories that shaped its history. Jane has a Masters in Local History and a History PhD underway, but it is her storytelling skills that bring the vibrant past of the town alive for all who join her acclaimed tours. She is passionate about history and her hometown of Ennis and has the ability to use rich historical sources to recreate both the drama and daily life of this extraordinary town and its place in Irish history.
 
History, mythology, legends, ghosts, poverty, murders and more are all explored on her public tour which runs every day except Wednesday and Sunday at 11:00 am leaving from the Temple Gate Hotel Courtyard in the town centre. Discover how ‘nagging’ women were punished in 18^th century Ennis by being strapped to a stool and ducked in the waters of the river Fergus! Hear tales of famine and poverty, murders and hangings, rebellions and riots. Explore the mythology and legends of the town – from banshees to Biddy Early (the magical lady of Clare who was tried for witchcraft in Ennis). The lives and experiences of the ordinary poor of Ennis are illuminated as well as the powerful leaders that shaped our destiny. In addition to this very popular historical walking tour Jane also runs a Gourmet History Walking Tour which marries the history of the town and Irish food with tastings of the wealth of local Clare produce available and a Haunted History Tour which offers a unique insight into the darker side of the towns past.
